Early Years
Our St. John's Walham Green Early Years offers children an excellent start in their school life.
In our Early Years Foundation Stage, we use the indoor and outdoor environments to support play and learning. Our curriculum is play based as we recognise that children in the Early Years develop best when their own interests and curiosities are nurtured through play. Adults challenge and stretch the children's understanding through crafting carefully planned play experiences and opportunities alongside adult lead learning opportunities.
Our whole school St. John's curriculum begins in Nursery where pupils begin to learn the foundational knowledge and skills to flourish in Early Years and beyond. Our curriculum is based on the Early Years Framework and has been created to prepare children for success throughout the school. We understand the central importance of language and vocabulary and ensure that 'talk' is central to all that we do. We have carefully sequenced learning opportunities that allow us to teach key knowledge and support skill acquisition while ensuring that our curriculum responds 'in the moment' to the interests and curiosities of our children.
The progress of each child is assessed termly to check that they are working within the expected range for their age. At the end of Reception all teachers complete statutory assessments of the children against the ‘Early Learning Goals’.
The Nursery consists of 26 places for children who are turning four in the academic year. The two Reception classes (four to five-year-olds) have a pupil admission of 60. Please see the admissions tab for more information.
