Physical Education

At St John’s Walham Green, through our PE curriculum, we intend to create an environment which promotes enjoyment in activity and an appreciation of the principles and standards that allow pupils to aspire for excellence in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. The curriculum intends to provide extensive and challenging range of opportunities and experiences for all pupils to build a love and appreciation of physical activity and sport with the primary goal that this remains with them through their next stage of education and their adult life.

The curriculum is designed to encourage pupils to set ambitious personal targets for their own progress, while developing an understanding of the processes that will allow them to not only reach their potential but to exceed it. Whilst meeting the National Curriculum requirements, we aim to provide an inclusive, active environment where we inspire and develop physically competent pupils who are able to apply a broad range of skills in a variety of physical activities and across a variety of learning settings.

Through opportunities as individuals and as part of a team, the curriculum helps pupils understand how to apply physical, social and emotional skills with integrity, respect and pride.   Our curriculum aims to support pupils to enthusiastically apply healthy lifestyle behaviours, whilst developing their social and emotional communication skills and benefiting from the positive impact that PE has on emotional wellbeing.

Our curriculum has been developed to support pupils to develop in four key areas;

Physical - Pupils are encouraged and given every opportunity to participate in physical activity at least twice a week and are physically active for sustained periods of time. Our varied curriculum allows pupils to develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities.

Wellbeing/Healthy - Pupils are given guidance to make informed choices to take part in physical activity. They are provided with a safe environment, and through the promotion of core values, are encouraged to develop confidence, perseverance and understanding to allow them to lead healthy, active lifestyles.

Social - Pupils work individually and in teams throughout their lessons. They learn to accept defeat as well as celebrate their victories and personal achievements in a healthy fashion. We aim to equip pupils with the skills needed to enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other.

Cognitive/Thinking - Pupils are provided with regular opportunities to explore, compare and evaluate their, and others, performances. They are also encouraged to demonstrate and recognise improvements to achieve personal bests and understand how these improvements occurred.
